European Kate Granger Awards are back for another year

HIMSS Europe will be launching the second year of the European Kate Granger Awards for Compassionate Care at eHealth Tallinn, Estonia on the 16-18 October 2017.

BARCELONA, SPAIN- (HealthTech Wire / News) - Dr Kate Granger, who sadly passed away in July 2016, launched the awards in England to recognise the people and organisations delivering compassionate care.

Now in their second year, the awards will be judged by a dedicated panel based on three categories: individual, team/organisations, and the best use of innovation. With the backing of HIMSS Europe and the support of Kate’s widower, Chris Pointon, colleagues in the rest of Europe will once again have the opportunity to recognise outstanding patient care.

Successful nominees will need to demonstrate how they have made a difference to patient care and in particular, show evidence of:

  • an ambitious and innovative way of delivering care;
  • high-quality management and leadership;
  • how the approach has made a difference to patient care;
  • how it makes a difference in the long-term; and
  • how easily it can be replicated in other organisations.

Last year winner, Eilis Hession, who is a General Manager in Primary/Social Care for HSE Community Health East in Ireland said: “I was and still am grateful, honoured, humbled and privileged to have received this prestigious award in memory of Dr Kate Granger. She was such an inspiring women throughout her life and now has left us with such a legacy to be compassionate health care leaders”.

“I would strongly urge all health care settings to become involved in nominating individuals. After all patients seldom can remember what was said to them but they sure remember how it felt”.

It was while undergoing treatment for cancer that Kate started writing about seeing the NHS “through patients’ eyes”. She launched the #hellomynameis campaign on social media to talk about some of her intensely moving experiences. The campaign reminds healthcare professionals of the importance of introducing themselves to patients and how a relatively “small thing” can positively affect a patient’s experience of the treatment and care they receive.

This year’s Kate Granger Awards Ceremony is supported by HIMSS Europe - a leader of transformation in healthcare through the use of information and technology. The winner will be announced during HIMSS Europe 18 on 27-29 May Sitges, Barcelona.
