Transforming Healthcare Delivery – The Latvian Way

Latvia’s accession to the EU came with the obligation to transform its healthcare delivery with the implementation of eHealth. More than 10 years later, the underlying infrastructure is in place and a handful of e-services are available. By 2016, electronic health records, e-prescriptions and e-bookings will become mandatory and change the face of healthcare delivery – at least that’s the plan!

With the Latvian Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU) in the first half of 2015, Latvia currently enjoys more international attention than usual. Latvia has declared patient-centered healthcare as one of the priorities during its presidency. As Latvia also hosts this year’s eHealth Week in its capital Riga, HIMSS Insights takes this opportunity to look at the state of eHealth in Latvia.
